Rinse a removable filter, loosen trapped food with the tool allowed for that mesh, and lock it back in place. GE’s Ultra Fine filter needs a sponge rather than a brush. The GE Fine plate and Whirlpool assembly below allow soft-brush cleaning.

Which cleaning tool is safe for this filter?

| Component / source | Cleaning method | Reinstallation check |
|---|---|---|
| GE Ultra Fine | Warm soapy rinse; carefully remove stubborn material with a sponge. Brushes/scouring pads can damage it. | Replace and turn clockwise to lock, using the Fine Filter’s embossed alignment arrow. |
| GE Fine mesh plate | Warm soapy rinse. A soft brush or sponge may be needed for stubborn soil; scouring can scratch. | Replace both components and secure the retaining posts as shown. |
| Whirlpool described upper/lower removable filters | Running-water rinse; a soft brush for stubborn material. No wire brush or scouring pad. | Lower filter seated; upper assembly locked. If that upper assembly turns freely, it is not locked. |
Removal and cleaning
End the cycle and let hot parts cool. Follow the appliance’s power precautions, remove the lower rack and photograph the installed filter. Use the removal directions for the identified assembly. A filter that will not release with the described motion needs another look at the locking mechanism, not leverage against the mesh.
Rinse the removed part over the sink. Work around the pleats or screen with the tool in the table, rinse away the loosened debris, then inspect the mesh in good light. Keep the pieces in their removal order until they go back in.
The final lock matters as much as washing
Replace a torn screen or broken retaining tab with the matching part. Keep your hands out of the sump opening while inspecting it: trapped debris can include broken glass.
Refit the parts in order and complete the lock check in the table. For the Whirlpool assembly described here, an upper filter that turns freely is still unlocked. Run the machine only with its filters seated and locked. Before returning the rack, check that the spray arm turns without hitting an item.
Clean filter, dirty dishes: what to check next
Look at the next normal load. Food particles, cloudy glass and standing water lead to different checks. Choose the symptom that remains.

| Remaining problem | Next check | Change course when |
|---|---|---|
| Food or grit on dishes | Check that tall items do not block spray-arm rotation and water can reach the loaded surfaces. Use the manual’s spray-arm cleaning procedure for blocked holes. | Correct loading and owner care still leave poor cleaning: contact support. |
| Cloudy glass but no food particles | Use the separate film-versus-etching guide; check water hardness and rinse-aid instructions. | Persistent cloudiness needs a glassware diagnosis, not another filter wash. |
| Water remains after the cycle or a drain error returns | Follow the model’s not-draining procedure; do not reach blindly into the sump or dismantle a pump. | Unresolved drainage, leakage or inaccessible parts require service. |
| Dishes clean normally again | Resume the model’s inspection schedule and note what was removed. | Use the amount of buildup at the next scheduled check to judge whether more frequent care is needed. |
Keep the instructions and the result together.
