How much HE detergent to use—and what residue can tell you

Find the dose on your bottle, avoid double dispensing, and distinguish detergent residue from lint, softener spots and drainage trouble.

Use the package dose for your load, not the drawer’s MAX line. For a manual dose, switch automatic dispensing off and put liquid or powder in the correct compartment. Then match the fix to the residue: undissolved powder, loose lint, greasy spots and persistent suds need different checks.

An illustrative 30 mL package dose fills below a 60 mL drawer MAX line. Filling to MAX would double that stated dose.
Illustrative arithmetic: a 30 mL label dose does not become 60 mL because the drawer holds more. View full size

Measure what you have been pouring

Find the mark on the bottle’s own cap for today’s load size and soil level. Confirm the detergent is labeled HE. Even within one brand, a new concentration can change the amount required. Tide identifies load size, soil and water hardness as the factors to match to the package directions.

Read faint cap marks at eye level in good light before pouring. If the label gives milliliters, a dedicated, clearly marked laundry measure can make that dose easier to repeat. Keep it with the laundry supplies. A powder dose in grams cannot be measured as the same number of milliliters.

Suppose a label calls for 30 mL for your load and the drawer holds 60 mL up to MAX. Filling to MAX doubles the dose. Measure 30 mL. If your package uses cap marks instead of milliliters, use its matching cap.

Fix the dispenser setup before changing brands

Find the dispenser drawing for the main-wash compartment, liquid insert or selector, and automatic-dosing control. A liquid-only insert can hold powder back in the drawer instead of delivering it to the wash.

LG's additive guide specifies removing its liquid detergent cup for powder in the main-wash compartment. Whirlpool designs differ: some raise a selector for powder, while others place powder in the basket. Follow the arrangement pictured for your model. Packet placement is separately specified; do not put one into an unidentified drawer.

For a manually measured load, turn off automatic dosing using the model's control. The cited Whirlpool Load & Go procedure presses its button until the indicator is off, then uses the single-dose compartment. Other systems use a setting or app. Verify the off state before starting so reservoir dosing does not add to the manual dose.

The amount must also fit below the dispenser limit. Samsung advises a smaller load or suitable more concentrated detergent if the package dose exceeds MAX. Do not overflow the drawer to satisfy the bottle directions.

What kind of residue is left?

Look at the mark before changing the detergent. Loose paper flakes, undissolved granules, greasy spots and persistent foam have different causes. A leaking washer or a drain error needs repair before further wash trials.

For powder residue, correct dissolution and loading

Loosen a packed load so garments can move according to the loading instructions, and separate a bulky blanket from unrelated clothing. LG's residue guidance identifies excess or hardened detergent and poorly dissolved powder on bulky items as possible causes.

If powder is not dissolving in cold water, choose a warmer setting only when the fabric label and detergent permit it, or select an appropriate HE liquid for that load. Hot water is not an automatic fix for wool, shrink-prone items, or colors. Close the detergent container and keep it dry so the next measure is not a lump.

For the next comparable load, use the corrected compartment and measured dose. Check the drawer afterward: an undispensed lump points toward delivery or dissolution, while an empty drawer with marks on one fabric sends you back to the garment or load. Avoid adding a booster during this check; it creates another possible residue.

Clear old residue, then check one normal load

For the Samsung washers covered by its residue guide, run an empty cycle without detergent or additives. If residue remains, Samsung allows two more empty cycles and calls for service after the third. Stop earlier for leaks or drainage faults. Other brands can specify a different cleanup cycle.

Confirm automatic dispensing and optional additives are off for an empty or rinse-only check. Do not add vinegar, bleach or another chemical to neutralize suds.

If the empty cycle is clear but residue returns with laundry, recheck the load: pockets, clumped powder, softener placement and double dosing. Judge the next comparable load for both cleanliness and new residue. If clothes are still dirty, check loading, water hardness and the package dose rather than repeatedly reducing detergent.

Residue and odor can need different checks.
