Wash the removable metal grease filter. Replace disposable charcoal inserts used to reduce odors in recirculating hoods. A hood can contain both, so look behind the metal filter before putting everything into the sink.

| Component | Action in the cited guidance | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Broan aluminum/all-metal grease filter | Wash; sink washing with mild detergent can reduce discoloration | Detergent or water conditions may discolor it without reducing performance. |
| Broan baffle filter | Clean with soap and water when surfaces become unsightly | Its channels and mounting differ from a mesh insert. |
| GE common metal grease filter | Hot water and detergent; dry completely before reinstalling | No ammonia products. Dishwasher washing can discolor the filter. |
| Whirlpool / Broan described non-ducted carbon filter | Replace the specified filter | Do not wash these disposable filters. A metal surround does not make them washable. |
How to wash the metal filter
Turn the hood off and let it cool. Support the filter with one hand while releasing the catch with the other. Note its direction and any charcoal insert behind it. Protect the cooktop while handling the greasy part.
For the common GE metal filters in the linked guide, soak and swish in hot water and detergent. Light brushing helps release embedded dirt. GE excludes ammonia products. Rinse away loosened grease and let the filter dry completely before reinstalling.
Slide the filter into its supports and close the locking tab. Check that every edge is held before letting go. A bent frame that will not seat or a broken catch needs repair before the hood is used.
How often does each filter need attention?
Cooking frequency and filter design change the interval. Use the row for your filter as a starting point, then inspect for grease at that interval. Frequent frying may need more frequent cleaning.

| Source / component | Published starting point | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Broan aluminum mesh | Approximately monthly | More frequent washing with grease-heavy cooking |
| GE common metal grease filter | About six months or as needed | Depends on cooking; check the model instructions |
| Whirlpool described recirculating charcoal filter | Up to six months | Normal use; replace with the specified part |
Buying the right replacement
Record the hood model, whether it vents outside or recirculates, and the filter part number. Count the inserts needed for one complete change. A two-filter hood uses up a four-pack in two changes.
Compare thickness and catches as well as width and length. An equally sized filter can still have the wrong mounting. If clean, correctly fitted filters leave weak capture or unusual noise, describe that remaining symptom to service before ordering another set.
Keep the instructions and the result together.
