How to clean baked-on grease from oven door glass

Soften the exposed inner glass, lift the loosened grease, and remove the film left behind. GE, Whirlpool and Bosch methods are compared without mixing their surface rules.

On fully cool oven glass, start with a damp soapy cloth to soften grease, then wipe it off and remove the soap with clean damp cloths. GE suggests about 10 minutes of cloth contact. For persistent spots, use the glass-cleaning method for your oven brand below. Clean the exposed inner pane only; pouring liquid into the door will not wash streaks trapped between panes.

Find which surface actually holds the stain

Open the cool door and choose one small brown patch on the accessible, oven-facing glass. Wipe it with a damp cloth and inspect the same spot after drying. Grease that transfers to the cloth or leaves a changed edge is on the reachable surface. Repeat on the exterior if needed. If both accessible faces are clean but a drip remains visibly deeper in the door, treat it as a between-pane mark.

A brown splatter, white cleaner film and a mark behind the pane can look similar when wet. Check the dry spot before choosing the next treatment. Keep the oven off and fully cool, leave the door installed, and keep body weight off it.

Use a cloth soak first, not a flood of cleaner

Gather mild dish soap, water, two or three soft cloths, a small bowl and a floor towel. GE's door-glass tip is to leave a soapy cloth on the glass for about 10 minutes. Its support instructions specify damp rather than dripping wet. Wring the cloth before laying it over the stain, keeping it inside the exposed glass area.

Lift the cloth and wipe the loosened material into a clean fold. Rinse or change the cloth when it becomes greasy. Follow with a separate water-dampened cloth, then dry a small area to inspect progress. A clean patch beside the remaining stain gives you a useful comparison; spreading dirty wash water across the whole window does not.

Keep the woven gasket and door openings dry. The seal is not a scrubbing pad, and liquid running into the door can create another stain you cannot reach. On the GE self-clean models covered by its inner-door-panel guidance, disconnect power before hand cleaning. Use the accessible disconnect or breaker rather than pulling a range out to find its plug.

For stubborn grease, choose one brand's glass method

Choose the row for your oven. These are separate manufacturer methods; GE’s scrubber allowance does not carry over to Bosch glass. For a coated or replacement pane, use the care method specified for that pane.

Complete the Whirlpool paste method without leaving a white film

Keep the scope small. If only the lower third of the window has grease, that is the part to treat. Covering the clean upper glass makes more product to remove and brings paste closer to openings without helping the stained area.

  1. After removing the earlier soap, mix baking soda and water in a bowl until it forms a spreadable paste. The source gives no mandatory water ratio; make enough for the remaining glass patches.
  2. Spread it on the affected glass with a flexible spatula or brush, keeping it away from seals, slots and trim. Let it sit for 20 minutes or longer, as Whirlpool's glass guide specifies.
  3. Lift the paste with a wet microfiber cloth. Turn to a clean face as it fills. Where this method applies, gently lift residual grease with a plastic scraper rather than increasing pressure with a metal blade.
  4. Remove the remaining product with clean damp cloths and dry with a fresh microfiber cloth. Inspect the dry glass before calling the job finished. This workflow uses the paste and water route without adding the guide's optional acid spray.

A shrinking grease spot versus a white streak

Hypothetical grease result: a two-inch brown splatter shrinks to one inch after the cloth soak, leaving brown material on the cloth. Treat the smaller patch with the chosen manufacturer’s method. Clear away the loosened grease before inspecting it again. The clean upper glass needs no paste.

Hypothetical residue result: the brown soil is gone, but a white smear appears as the glass dries. Change to clean rinse water and a fresh cloth, then dry that same spot. If it clears, finish removing the remaining paste rather than applying more. A mark visibly behind both clean faces belongs to the separate between-pane task.

Finish the surface job before considering door disassembly

Remove every cloth, wipe away visible cleaner residue and dry the accessible glass and surrounding areas you cleaned. The door should close as it did before. Heating the oven is not a substitute for removing cleaning product.

Between-pane cleaning is a separate repair-access task. Whirlpool notes that removing or taking apart the door can affect the warranty and may need professional help. Identify the exact model and approved access procedure before undoing screws; leave the assembled door in place while doing the surface cleaning above. A streak behind the pane cannot be fixed by feeding a soaked cloth or spray through a vent.

For later upkeep, wipe new accessible splashes after the oven has cooled. Keep a short record of the glass method that worked and the cleaner used, so next time you can start there instead of repeating several products.

Save the glass-cleaning method with your oven model.
