ROOMS, DOORWAYS & STOCK BOARDS

Room-by-room baseboard calculator

Turn wall measurements into continuous baseboard pieces. Group rooms using the same trim, compare whole-board costs, then inspect the layout in the cut-list planner.

Two rooms, one matching baseboard profile

A study has walls of 120, 96, 120 and 96 inches. On the first wall, the excluded doorway and casing span starts at 36 inches and is 36 inches wide. The remaining runs on that wall are 36 and 48 inches. Add the other three walls: 396 inches, or 33 feet, in five pieces.

A hall has walls of 96, 72, 96 and 72 inches. Exclude the first 36 inches of the first wall: 300 inches, or 25 feet, in four pieces. Together the rooms need 58 feet in nine continuous pieces, before fitting allowance. That is a measured length, not a whole-board purchase quantity. An 8-foot board cannot supply the study’s unbroken 120-inch piece.

The example starts with 1/8-inch kerf, 1/4-inch trim at each stock end and zero extra length per piece. Prices of $14, $22 and $30 for 8-, 12- and 16-foot stock are editable examples, not quotes. The purchase comparison includes cutting losses and keeps each continuous piece intact.

Measure the runs before planning the cuts

Use the same reference end for all opening positions on a wall. Exclude the full span where baseboard stops, including casing when appropriate. Touching exclusions are allowed; overlapping exclusions must be corrected. Add each wall separately so the planner keeps the room and wall location with every piece.

Measure corner details on site. Outside corners, copes and returns can change the length needed; the extra-per-piece field is your allowance, not a geometry calculation. Confirm actual finished dimensions in the cut-list planner before cutting. Product profiles, installation conditions and defects can also affect the purchase.

The Home Depot baseboard installation guide discusses measurement checks, outside-corner allowance and extra material. Follow the instructions for the trim you select.
